This gene encodes a ligand-activated transcription factor involved in the regulation of biological responses to planar aromatic hydrocarbons. This receptor has been shown to regulate xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes such as cytochrome P450. Its ligands included a variety of aromatic hydrocarbons.

Function:
Ligand-activated transcriptional activator. Binds to the XRE promoter region of genes it activates. Activates the expression of multiple phase I and II xenobiotic chemical metabolizing enzyme genes (such as the CYP1A1 gene). Mediates biochemical and toxic effects of halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons. Involved in cell-cycle regulation. Likely to play an important role in the development and maturation of many tissues.

Subcellular Location:
Cytoplasm. Nucleus. Initially cytoplasmic; upon binding with ligand and interaction with a HSP90, it translocates to the nucleus.

Tissue Specificity:
Expressed in all tissues tested including blood, brain, heart, kidney, liver, lung, pancreas and skeletal muscle.

Contains 1 basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) domain.

芳香烴受體（AHR）是一種配體激活轉(zhuǎn)錄因子,可介導(dǎo)多環(huán)芳烴類化合物的毒性（包括致癌性）反應(yīng),還參與一些重要的生物學(xué)過(guò)程,如信號(hào)轉(zhuǎn)導(dǎo)、細(xì)胞分化、細(xì)胞凋亡等。人體的肺、肝、腎、胎盤(pán)、腭扁桃體、B淋巴細(xì)胞等各種組織和細(xì)胞中都存在AHR。AHR對(duì)生長(zhǎng)發(fā)育和生理功能等具有調(diào)控作用,在一些癌癥（乳腺癌和卵巢癌等）發(fā)生發(fā)展中起促進(jìn)作用。
